Free app offers Macbook Air prize draw in October, sponsorship deal with SMP gives away music prizes

Appysnap, the iPhone app which challenges players to complete photo-based missions in return for prizes, is available for free to Android-based smartphones from today (Tuesday 11th October).

Appysnap - Snaps

Android users will now be able to collect points and win prizes in return for taking snaps of everyday places, people and themes.

While Appysnap has given away Amazon Kindles, iPods and gift certificates on a weekly basis since launch, players have the chance to win a Macbook Air in October. Every time a player completes a mission by taking a photo, they'll be entered into the prize draw at the end of the month; the more missions a player enters, the greater their chance of winning the prize.

Appysnap is also announcing its first commercial sponsorship deal with ShareMyPlaylists.com (SMP), the music-sharing community for over 100,000 Spotify users. SMP will be sponsoring a series of music-based Appysnap missions in November, with music-related prizes for the winners.

Co-founder Paul Smith says: "It's been a really exciting time for Appysnap since launch. We've been constantly improving the experience for iPhone players since launch, but the number one request has been for an Android version which we're delighted to release today."

Keiron Donaghue, founder of ShareMyPlaylists.com said: "Appysnap is one of the most exciting and interesting apps I've seen, with huge potential for marketing businesses by driving traffic - whether that's through a store's front door, or to a website. I'm very happy SMP is the first to utilise Appysnap to market ShareMyPlaylists.com in an innovative and unique way."

Appysnap, which has players across Europe (in particular the UK, Holland and Ireland) and the US, also plans to launch location-based missions shortly, which will allow players to complete mission s specific to their city or neighbourhood.

ENDS

- Appysnap is a mobile app available for free in the iTunes App Store and in the Android Market.

Amazon.com has updated its Kindle Android app with features designed to tap into the Honeycomb interface currently found on the Motorola Xoom and T-Mobile's LG G-Slate.

Available now at Amazon's Appstore for Android, Kindle for Android 3.0 is geared for all Android devices but takes special advantage of the larger displays and other attributes offered by Honeycomb-powered tablets.

The updated version offers a virtual bookshelf that stretches across the screen to let people visually browse and view titles at the Kindle store. The new interface also provides quicker access to customer reviews, recommendations, and other items of interest to book buyers. Further, Amazon has tweaked the layout for magazines and newspapers so that readers can now see full color images on their tablets.

Beyond the improvements for large-screen tablets, the Kindle Android app now gives people the ability to pause and resume downloads of any item. A built-in dictionary with more than 250,000 entries and definitions is also included, according to Amazon. Finally, the update throws in a slew of bug fixes and support for the German language.

"We've...created a beautiful new user interface and a seamless shopping experience tailored to the look and feel of Honeycomb tablets," Amazon Kindle Director Dorothy Nicholls said in a statement.

As always, the Kindle app comes with Amazon's Whispersync feature, which synchronizes books and bookmarks across a range of devices so that people can move from phone to tablet to Kindle reader to PC without losing their place.

Starting later this year, Kindle e-reader owners and Kindle app users will also be able to borrow electronic books from 11,000 libraries.

However, Forbes said it's unclear whether the new Android tablet would use the Streak brand name and be part of the same family, reporting that the device at this point is still "unbranded."

Dell has also been busy trying to gear up a new 10-inch Windows 7 tablet. This tablet will reportedly be delayed until the fall, said Forbes, following an initial announcement from Dell that it would reach consumers by the middle of 2011.They probably are smart to move it UP to June because thats when everybody else is coming out with one. Samsung and Toshiba have theirs coming out. Who knows when LG's version and the LG Google version well come out. By the end of summer there could be over 10 Honeycomb tables out.

If you wait, all the Tablet buyers well already be buying. As of now I don't think having this many tablets is good for the market, and in the long term it wouldn't surprise me that only about 5 Google Tables are made brought out each year. As of now there is not enough between each tablet to make any one any different.

I picked up my pandigital novel 7 at Radio Shack on sale. My theory is that I could get a lot of uses from my computer similar to a tablet computer at an inexpensive "e-reader" price. The theory has thus far proven valid. I've been able to install a youtube application (though the instructions with the device suggested I could not), to install an app for my mog.com subscription music account, to install TuneinRadio which streams lots of internet radio, and to add Kindle and Kobo e-reader apps to the in-built Barnes & Noble Nook app. In addition to the SlideMe marketplace, I've been able to download apps from the Amazon marketplace. This little device has been a lot of fun, and very useful.

My pandigital novel 7 e-reader with apps installed

Article by Steve

Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $ 79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that's the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor - Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen - I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with th e 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! - At $ 79, you can't go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display - almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi - this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user's personal preference. If you travel often and woul d like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you're better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks - These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage - this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that's a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life - too early to tell but Kindle ba ttery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I'm going on a long flight, this device won't need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter - this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $ 8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple's portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $ 2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line - the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn't need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it's just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don't have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get - baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don't really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it's a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you're looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the "strangely therapeutic" Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fi re!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

I've been involved in retail book sales for more than a decade, and eBooks have been on the horizon now for nearly all of that time. I think they may have arrived. I downloaded the free Kindle software for my phone just to see what it looked like. Then I downloaded a book that I was planning to read anyway, thinking I'd get started on the phone, and later grab the real copy from the coffeeshop to finish it. But I found the reading experience on the phone to be pretty nice, and before I knew it, I'd finished the whole book. And started on another. Four novels in, things look strangely different. It's easy to overlook just how much reading I do in a typical day. Checking news and gadget blogs isn't really a good use of time, but that's what I'd been in the habit of doing when I was waiting in line somewhere, or had 20 minutes of downtime. Since my phone's with me *all the time,* it's been trivially easy to spend that time reading a good book instead. (Note: However you go about reading them, I highly recommend Christopher Fowler's Peculiar Crimes Unit mysteries.)

For The Safe & Sound Household Rolling Gates Are Must In New York

Article by Tomas Justin

Security is a very important factor when it comes to buildings. This is not only important for private homes but also in the case of commercial enterprises. If a theft or robbery occurs, it could spell disaster for a family or a business and cause unprecedented losses. That is why it is important to have good gates, which can prevent burglars and thieves from gaining access to the inside of the house and the garage. There are burglaries taking place regularly even in places like New York City or NYC. Rolling gates are very useful because they not only offer security and protection but are also very easy to use. They must be repaired from time to time, which is why NYC rolling gate repair must be done.

There are several useful features of the NYC rolling gate. First of all, they are very user-friendly. One can easily open or close these rolling gates. This can be done by the use of an electronic switch, a remote control, a keycard or some mobile device like iPho ne or Blackberry.

Let us look at some of the designs of the NYC rolling gate that are commonly available. These include the solid gate type, the see through or the gate with grill and the one with perforated finish. The solid gate type consists of 3 inch or 4-inch solid and regular slats finishing. The grill type of gate is aptly named because one can easily see through the gate to see what is on the other side of it. This comes in really handy when it is used in shops or stores, because then customers can check out the products inside. The third type is perforated and consists of small holes instead of grills and also allows the people to see what is inside. But without proper NYC rolling gate repair , no rolling gate is going to last very long. The material used in the grill and perforated gates is the same as in the slat gates.

There are different modes of operation of t he gates to choose from. First there is the manual rolling up gate system. As the name suggests, one has to manually open or close this type of gate and roll it up or down by pushing or pulling respectively. In some ways, this is better than the chain or motor drive systems of rolling gates. That is because in the latter two cases, there are even more mechanical parts involved and there could easily be complications and the gate might become jammed. The motor drive system of the rolling gate needs a switch. It can also have a button station or a remotely controlled button system.

Trained professionals must repair all the gates, irrespective of the make and manufacturer, from time to time. So it is important to search online for companies that offer rolling gate repair NYC. There can be requirements of repairing of the motor, the drive system, the circuits, the switch-key setup, the body, the chain, the handle etc. Whatever may be the requirement, one must get it done, because it is not wise to compromise with security.

The dual release of the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z has everybody talking. Both phones feature the Android 2.2 (Froyo) Operating System and both are different takes on the already awesome HTC Desire. There has been tons of hype surrounding both handsets, and the recent release of them both has sent shockwaves of interest throughout the industry.
The HTC Desire Z is the topic for today; a lightweight touch screen device with a flick out QWERTY keyboard for enhanced messaging. The phones obvious aesthetic qualities include the 3.7 inch display which has a pixel resolution of 480 x 800 (WVGA). The gorgeous screen also hosts the same capacitive touch technology as its predecessor, this mean that the UI utilises the multi-touch input method. As you would expect from a touch/QWERTY hybrid the screen has an accelerometer sensor which flips the UI when using the keyboard.
HTC have stuck with the slick HTC Sense overlay to decorate the new improved Android software; the Desire Z runs remarkably smooth and the 800MHz processor makes light work of the media heavy applications like the web browser and FriendStream. The mount for the keyboard is unique to the phone and rather than sliding out the panel of keys it lifts the screen up and then slides out the keys, this way they can provide a fully functional raised key pad; it is super sturdy and reliable, and gives the phone an industrial undertone to an otherwise professional feel.
Many of the features found on the Desire can be found on the new Desire Z. FriendStream still provides its SNS and messaging support by bringing everything under those categories beneath one umbrella. You also get you applications lined up in iPhone type menus and access to the Android Market if you realize that you dont have an app for a certain function. The Android Market has a growing population of apps which range from gaming to stock exchange management.
The Desire Z provides a full online experience with coverage for 3G network and turbo speed connectivity via Wi Fi. The web browser is fully capable of saving bookmarks and can be manipulated via multi-touch controls (pinch and zoom). The phone is integrated with many popular online services including Facebook and YouTube and compatible with sites like PayPal and eBay too. Users can quickly compose messages and e-mail thanks to the keyboard, the keys are a good size and well spaced for accurate typing, composing long winded messages no longer takes forever.
HTC have fitted the Desire Z with a 5MP digital camera which can capture 720p HD video and gorgeous high def photos which can be shared online or across Bluetooth. The video and music players are calibrated to playback a number of file types in there respective fields, a 3.5mm jack allows for headphones while the microSD slot will comfortably manage memory upgrades up to 32GB.
With the additions of the Desire HD and Desire Z to HTCs smartphone roster, there reputation for providing top quality and highly capable phones is rising. HTC are one of the few companies which seem to be trying to take the mobile technology market to the next level. They have become a real driving force in the current market with other companies like Sony Ericsson and Nokia struggling to keep up.

Israel and Palestinian hackers have been engaged in a cyber cold war for more than a decade. Israeli teenagers blocked websites belonging to the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, provoking Palestinians and other Arabs to declare an e-Jihad. Those attacks consisted mainly of denial of service attacks and defacing websites, although embarrassingly for Israel these included over the years high-profile sites like those of the Knesset and Foreign Ministry. During Operation Cast lead in 2009, Hamas was probably responsible for an attack on Israel’s Amos 3 spy satellite. More recently, Israeli hackers took over an official Hamas website and uploaded Israel’s national anthem onto it. .......***** All images are copyrighted by their respective authors ...... .. ................................................................................................................................................................................................. .. .....item 1).... LAS VEGAS--Israel's Snapkeys doesn't want to just be an alternative to the traditional QWERTY keyboard. It wants to kill it off for good. The company's Ryan Ghassabian taps out sentences on his tablet with all the speed and precision of a phonetic hitman as he demos Snapkeys for me at a small booth in the far back side of the Las Vegas Convention Center here at CES. Snapkeys is an invisible keyboard that uses 2i technology and predictive typing to eliminate the need to actually look where you're typing on touch-screen devices. For most of you, that sentence will be total nonsense, like it was to me when I first heard about Snapkeys, so here's how it actually works. The idea is to take all the characters on a normal keyboard and reduce them to only four "buttons"--those that stand on one point (F, I, T, etc.); those that stand on two (M, N, X...); those that stand on a wide base (Z, U, L...); and characters with a closed circle (@, P, O...). Snapkeys introduces four new icons for each of these new typing areas, effectively reducing the full QWERTY board down to only this: .. ............................................ img code photo .... cute, emoticon-esque figures i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2012/01/12/snap.PNG These cute, emoticon-esque figures are hoping to kill QWERTY. (Credit: Screenshot by Eric Mack/CNET) ............................................ .. .. Notice that there are two extra narrow spaces on the sides--the one on the right is primarily the new spacebar, and the left is backspace. Type the area that matches the shape of the letter you want and Snapkeys uses predictive typing to figure out exactly which character you're after. The company swears it gets it right 99 percent of the time. Once you've got a handle on this much reduced interface, you can make the entire keyboard invisible. According to the Ghassabian, this is what Snapkeys is all about--reclaiming the screen space currently given over to a keyboard. Imagine typing a comment about a show you're watching on your iPad to a friend without have to squish or cover the video with a typepad. "We believe that in three years' time we will be the standard for text input for all touch-screen devices," Ghassabian says. But Snapkeys isn't interested in stopping at the touch screen. Ghassabian says they're looking at ways of embedding Snapkeys in a car's steering wheel, for example--too soon to say if that would worsen or improve our distracted driving epidemic, but a cool notion nonetheless. Snapkeys isn't out just yet, and Ghassabian says it won't be available as an app. The company is currently negotiating with wireless carriers around the world to include it as an input method on some upcoming phones and devices. But experts warn that for Israel, like other highly networked economies, the worst is yet to come. Lone-wolf hackers have gradually gained the knowledge and experience once the preserve of intelligence agencies and armies. Instead of defacing websites or shutting them down by flooding them with e-mails, growing numbers of hackers have the ability to disrupt electricity, water, medical and other critical services, they say. RELATED: Ayalon: Cyberspace attacks should be treated as terrorism Tiberias man arrested for using hacked cards “To shut down a major network, even for a government, is considered to be difficult, and demands excellent experience and knowledge, but there are a few tens of thousands of people around the world who could do it,” Ron Porat, who co-founded Hacktics, an Israeli maker of anti-hacking technology, told The Media Line. “Some of them have the motivation also.” A group of Saudi hackers dubbed Group-XP led by someone who goes by the web name OxOmar claimed last week to have obtained the personal information some 400,000 Israelis through credit card data. The Bank of Israel said the numbers were in fact much smaller, probably about 15,000 names, and that the credit card issuers had blocked the exposed accounts. Nevertheless, the attack drew a sharp response from Israel as well as its arch-nemesis, the Palestinian militant movement Hamas. Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon termed the cyber-attack “a breach of sovereignty comparable to a terrorist operation” and hinted at unspecified “retaliatory action.” Hamas, which is not believed to have had anything to do with this attack, termed it “a new form of resistance.” Spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri was quoted by Reuters urging others to ignore Ayalon’s threat and “use all means available in the virtual space to confront Israeli crimes.” Much attention has been focused on governments engaging in cyber-warfare, such as the Stuxnet worm that allegedly wreaked havoc on Iran’s nuclear program or when a Chinese state-controlled telecommunications company hijacked a big chunk of the world’s Internet traffic, including data from the US military, for 18 minutes in April 2010. But hackers like OxOmar are a growing threat as well. Other cyber wars have erupted across the Middle East. Anonymous, a loose collection of so-called “hacktivists,” launched denial of service attacks against government websites in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere during the Arab Spring uprisings. In November, Anonymous turned its sites on the Muslim Brotherhood. “The Muslim Brotherhood has become a threat to the revolution Egyptians had fought for, some with their lives,” it declared in a video. While Israeli credit card companies were handling the Saudi break-in, Turkish hackers were threatening to unleash a wave of attacks against French websites after lawmakers in Paris approved legislation that would ban the denial of the Armenian genocide. They have already assaulted French websites, including that of Valerie Boyer, the French politician who introduced the law that could punish genocide deniers with jail time. But that is small change compared to what hacker are potential capable of doing, say experts. Indeed, hackers now take the trouble to exploit human weaknesses to enter networks, for instance, applying for a job and using the interview to gain access to a company’s headquarters and physical access to a computer. “These kind of things were once done by the CIA, but now they are being done by hackers. It’s becoming very, very hard to defend any organization including the army and intelligence units,” said Porat. “In the past most hackers used a single vector or two to hack into system. They use multi-vector attacks now.” Danny Dolev, a leading computer scientist and engineer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that Israel was as well protected as any heavily networked economy even if it remains vulnerable. Policy makers and defense officials have over the past year come to recognize the extent of the threat. In August, he noted, the government created a National Cyber Directorate to coordinate activities of the agencies that deal with the issue and to secure infrastructure against cyber attacks. The exposure of credit card details will awaken the public’s attention, which is as critical as technology defenses. “I’m glad in a certain way it happened because it will awaken awareness,” Dolev told The Media Line. “Awareness means being careful when you plug in a disk on key, being careful when you change a password and being careful when you put your information on a social network.” Dolev expressed doubt that a lone hacker is capable of bringing down an entire economy, but he said they are capable of doing serious damage. “Let’s assume a single hacker enters the blood database and changes few of the blood types of the database,” he said. “This would be horrendous. It would not bring down a country but it could do a lot of harm. There is damage that would be significant.” .. ............................................................................................................................................................................................. .. ..
